Limb Asymmetry: Complications and Management Methods

Limb asymmetry is a condition in which one leg is shorter than the other. This difference is common during human growth and development. If the condition is not assessed in time, asymmetry leads to serious complications over time, as the body constantly tries to compensate for the incorrect position.

When there is a difference in leg length, your body is forced to compensate to maintain balance. In this process, the pelvis tilts towards the shorter leg, triggering a chain reaction. The incorrect position of the pelvis automatically causes curvature of the spine, which is often accompanied by shoulder asymmetry.

The prolonged use of compensatory mechanisms is tiring for the body and often causes chronic lower back pain. Addressing the problem requires a detailed examination to establish the exact difference and plan appropriate measures. It is entirely possible to manage this condition without surgery using modern conservative methods.

The Ortho Foot clinic performs biomechanical assessments and baropodometry for patients using SensorMedica equipment. Specialised diagnostic testing determines the difference in length with millimetre precision. Based on the data obtained, a custom orthopaedic insole is made and fitted with a precisely sized lift to restore the body's balance.

Affected areas of the body

  • Pelvis
  • Spine
  • Lower back

Common symptoms

  • 01A feeling that one leg is shorter than the other.
  • 02Chronic lower back pain.
  • 03A visible difference in shoulder height.
  • 04A noticeable change in spinal alignment.
  • 05Incorrect positioning of the pelvis.

Accepted treatment methods

These methods are accepted in international clinical practice and are not exclusive to our clinic's approach.

  • Biomechanical assessment of the patient and baropodometry using SensorMedica technology to determine the difference in length with millimetre precision.
  • Fabrication of a custom orthopaedic insole and fitting it with a precisely sized lift.
  • Mechanical equalisation of limb length using an insole, returning the pelvis to its correct horizontal position and correcting spinal alignment.
  • Conservative management of the problem and ongoing exercises under specialist supervision to restore the body's balance without surgery.
