Flat Feet: Causes, Symptoms and Solutions

Flat feet — Pes Planus — is a condition in which the foot's arch is lowered and the entire sole touches the surface. It may be congenital or develop in adulthood as a result of weakening tendons and ligaments.

Many people with flat feet have no symptoms. In others, however, a lack of arch support causes a chain reaction of problems: the foot rolls inward (overpronation), the knee rotates, and the pelvis compensates. The arch itself may be the cause of pain arising anywhere along this chain.

Common causes include genetics, excess weight, pregnancy, ageing and injuries to the posterior tibial tendon. Runners and people who spend long periods standing are at risk.

Fortunately, flat feet respond well to treatment. The key is an accurate diagnosis, followed by the right combination of custom insoles and targeted exercises.

Accepted treatment methods

These methods are accepted in international clinical practice and are not exclusive to our clinic's approach.

  • A comprehensive baropodometric and gait assessment — to measure the degree of pronation.
  • Custom insoles tailored to the specific degree of lowering of your arch — rather than a standard model.
  • A targeted exercise programme — to strengthen the posterior tibial muscle and the intrinsic foot muscles.
  • Gradual progress as the foot adapts, with insole adjustments at follow-up visits.
