The development of a child's foot is a lengthy process that requires appropriate attention from parents. Flat feet is a condition in which the longitudinal arch of the foot is lowered and the sole makes full contact with the floor. This is common at an early age, but it does not always indicate a pathological condition. It is important to understand the stages of development so that you can distinguish what is physiologically normal from a condition that needs attention. Ortho Foot clinic recommends monitoring the development of your child's feet and consulting a specialist promptly when needed.
From birth to 3 years of age, flat feet are usually physiologically normal because the foot arch is covered by a fat pad and has not yet fully developed. Between the ages of 3 and 6, active arch development begins, and the muscles and tendons become stronger. It is at exactly 6 years of age that it becomes apparent whether the foot has developed correctly. During this critical period, the child's body needs support so that development can proceed naturally and in the right direction, while that support is most effective.
The foot is the foundation of the entire body, and improper development is not a problem confined to the foot. When the arch cannot perform its shock-absorbing function, there is an increased risk of deformity and abnormal mechanical loading extending to other parts of the body. This may negatively affect the knees, pelvis and spine. Without appropriate attention and the use of supportive aids, flat feet may lead to pain and body asymmetry over time.
To assess the condition of the feet, Ortho Foot performs biomechanical assessment and baropodometry using modern SensorMedica equipment. Following an accurate diagnosis, supportive measures are prescribed, including specific exercises, therapeutic massage and the use of custom-made orthopaedic insoles. An insole not only supports proper arch development but also reduces the risks of deformity extending to the joints above. Our clinic also uses technological solutions that provide optimal, individualised foot support.
